Father and son

Artworks by late Filipino artist Salvador Cabrera, Sr. and his son, Jojo Ayllon Cabrera, will be featured in “Pamana” at Altro Mondo – Arte Contemporanea fromApril 11 – 29, 2012.

“Pamana,” as the title suggests, showcases how artistic talent is passed on from father to son, regardless of different media, styles, or techniques. “Pamana” is also an homage of this son to his father, from whom he acquired the passion, the talent and the discipline.

Elder brother to National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, Salvador Cabrera, Sr., made a name for himself as a remarkable painter, illustrator and cartoonist. He is, in fact, considered as one of the country’s greatest illustrators during ‘50s. Fondly called within the art circle as “Bading,” he was in the league of known newspaper cartoonists like E.Z. Izon, Ben Alcantara, Mauro Malang Santos, Roddy Ragodon, and Hugo Yonzon. One of Bading’s famous works was the cartoon “Bindoy,” a farm boy and his adventures in the city. Bading’s paintings were also known for soulful images of everyday scenes—children playing on the streets, vendors arranging goods, sabungeros stroking their roosters.

Jojo spent most of his childhood helping out in his father’s studio, where he learned brushwork and figure-drawing. These skills later on became instrumental in his career in advertising. 19 years later, Jojo, now a creative director, once again turns his attention on the fine arts.
