In Mother/land, Filipina-American artist Nicolei Buendia Gupit unveils a poignant exploration of memory, migration, and belonging. Using distressed passports, textured photographs, and found objects, Gupit reclaims fragments of diasporic experience. Each piece is a layer of personal and collective memory, capturing both the textures of nature and the complexities of identity. Trees and photographs blend with fragile papers, evoking the fractured search for “home” amidst displacement and global upheaval.

Gupit’s multidisciplinary approach invites viewers to confront the impermanence and resilience of migrant identities shaped by climate change, capitalism, and the elusive American dream. Her work reflects a sensitivity to the pressures that shape diasporic lives while offering glimpses of rootedness within a transient existence. Mother/land becomes both an archive and a sanctuary, drawing viewers into a journey across landscapes and borders, where patterns of the natural and the manmade intertwine, revealing the persistent yearning to find home across distant lands.
