Uniting some of the Philippine art scene’s most exciting contemporary talents, Modern Mimesis is a group show that delves into the timeless impulse of artists to represent our world, a tradition echoing from ancient cave paintings to modern canvases.
This exhibit brings together nineteen talented artists–Archie Sumilang, Gino Nagret, Emman Acasio, Adrian Trijo, Kenneth Mamaril, Vincent Diñoso, Kiko Moran, Tokwa Peñaflorida, Eugene Dominguez, Wiji Lacsamana, Jerline Sunga, Alai Laia, Kyle Toribio, Pepe Mendoza, Angelo Valmoria Roxas, Kenneth Santiago, Efren Madlangsakay Jr., and Gelo Zarsuelo. Each with their unique style and approach, to explore figuration as a means to dive deep into the human experience.
In this collection, figures, both human and animal, and everyday objects transcend mere representation. They become mirrors reflecting our innermost thoughts, echoing the complexity of our minds, and expressing the depth of human connection. These artists offer us recognizable imagery, yet they infuse it with their unique stylization and interpretation.
Modern Mimesis is a journey into the surreal, a world where reflections on identity, relationships, and our place in the universe are unveiled. It’s a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the essence of existence, inviting viewers to contemplate the myriad facets of life.
