IMPRESSIONS OF LANDSCAPES

Olivia d’Aboville’s exhibition “Impressions of Landscapes” is a mesmerizing journey through the artist’s creative expression, inspired by her profound encounter with the works of Joan Mitchell and Claude Monet at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. D’Aboville’s signature style of manipulating and layering colorful shibori silk takes center stage, transforming each piece into a vibrant tapestry of textures and hues.

Profoundly moved by Mitchell’s powerful abstract landscapes, d’Aboville translates her artistic vision into a captivating collection of textile paintings. With her signature technique of cutting, layering, and juxtaposing pieces of colorful shibori silk, d’Aboville creates artworks that resonate with the energy and emotion of Mitchell’s paintings.

Each piece of cut silk resembles a brushstroke, while the layering offers transparency, depth, and texture. The exhibition also features d’Aboville’s personal impressions of landscapes from her childhood memories in Mindoro, capturing the lush greenery, the vast ocean, and the ever-changing sky.

D’Aboville’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her commitment to sustainability and her love for natural fibers from the Philippines. For the past eight years, she has focused on incorporating handwoven Philippine textiles into her work, showcasing her signature materials of shibori silk handwoven and hand-dyed in Palawan by Rurungan Sa Tubod Foundation, and handwoven abaca from Cebu Interlace. Her artworks, which she refers to as textile art or textile paintings, have graced renowned spaces such as the Hilton Manila, the Sheraton Manila, Conrad Hotel, Admiral Hotel, and Dusit Davao.

The exhibition is a testament to d’Aboville’s mastery of her craft and her ability to translate artistic inspiration into captivating textile paintings.
