Textiles and needlework have long been relegated to the domestic sphere—framed as craft rather than art, as duty rather than expression. Historically undervalued, these practices were seen as extensions of traditional femininity, reinforcing notions of purity, modesty, and domestic labor. Yet, from the banners of suffragists to the fiber-based works of contemporary artists, textiles have emerged as potent vehicles of resistance, reclaiming their place in both the public and artistic realms.

Between Starshine and Clay III brings together artists Margaux Blas, Aubrey Caabay, Shireen Co, Sarah Conanan, Olivia d’Aboville, Corinne Fernandez Garcia, ND Harn, Len-Len x Yllang Montenegro, Celline Mercado, Isha Naguiat, and Ja Turla—women who use thread, fabric, and fiber as tools of both storytelling and defiance. Their works examine the duality of textiles: soft yet subversive, delicate yet disruptive. Stitch by stitch, they weave narratives of identity, resistance, and transformation.

In a world where women’s voices have often been muted, these pieces speak volumes—not just in their form but in their very existence within a gallery space. Through needle and thread, these artists challenge limitations, honor overlooked labor, and ultimately redefine what it means for art, and women, to take up space.
