Alon

Step into the mesmerizing world of “Alon,” the debut solo exhibition of artist Lara Latosa. Alon, which means “wave” in Tagalog, invites viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty and power of the ocean through Latosa’s captivating artworks. The exhibition is endorsed by Oceana and UP-MSI, two esteemed organizations that recognize Latosa as an advocate for ocean protection and preservation.

Drawing inspiration from her deep connection with the ocean, Latosa embarked on this exhibition to delve into the vastness and ever-changing moods of the sea. The opportunity to showcase her art at Altro Mondo was the perfect platform for her to explore this subject matter and share her profound love for the ocean with others. Through her artwork, Latosa aspires to capture the majestic qualities of the ocean and inspire a sense of appreciation and protection for this precious natural resource.

Latosa’s inspiration for “Alon” stems primarily from the ocean itself. Hours of studying the ocean’s movements, colors, and textures both above and below the surface laid the foundation for her artistic creations. Additionally, she drew inspiration from documentary movies that revealed the ocean in new and fascinating ways. Her personal experiences of freediving, surfing, and simply being by the beach further nurtured her deep appreciation for the ocean’s beauty and power. In her art, Latosa endeavors to encapsulate the essence of the ocean, allowing viewers to connect with its magnificence.

Through her artwork, Latosa imparts a powerful message about the importance of ocean conservation. She aims to raise awareness about the threats facing the ocean, such as pollution, coral bleaching, and climate change. By experiencing her art, Latosa hopes to inspire viewers to take action in protecting our planet’s natural resources, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The quick-drying nature of acrylic paints allows Latosa to layer colors and textures with ease, a crucial aspect in capturing the ever-changing moods and movements of the ocean. By using gesso as a base layer, she adds further texture and depth to her artwork, bringing the ocean to life on the canvas with thick impasto waves. The combination of acrylic paints and gesso enables Latosa to create immersive and visually stunning pieces that authentically convey the essence of the ocean.

“Alon” is a testament to Latosa’s artistic journey and her passion for the ocean. Through her art, she brings together her love for the sea, her experiences, and her dedication to raising awareness about the need for ocean preservation.
