Making use of her background as a textile designer graduate, Olivia d’Aboville creates her own textile sculptures composed of an accumulation of materials of her latest obsession. Going metallic with nickel plated pins, aluminum and plastic studs with metal finish, she accumulates and juxtaposes these elements by the thousands to create organic-looking, richly textured flexible surfaces. Showcased in acrylic boxes, the display of the pieces might be compared to that of rare specimens.

Minimalist at first glance, one notices the richness in quality of the pieces that are full of opposite notions. Hard but soft, feminine but dangerous, sharp yet delicate, ice-cold but organic-looking, shiny but light-absorbent, static yet infused with movement, the pieces are no doubt intriguing in various aspects.

The Big Bang’s implosion of matter, the origin of life, living fossils, tessellation, molecular structures and multiplication—such notions were in the artist’s head during her creative research. Olivia d’Aboville never ventures too far from her fascination with the creatures of the deep. She is inspired by the many similarities between the abyssal world, the cosmic space and the infinitely small.
